Zahl

Zahl was a Norwegian Americana group. It was founded in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway by Geir Zahl, a singer-songwriter best known as co-founder and guitarist of alternative rock band Kaizers Orchestra. The line-up consisted of Geir Zahl (vocals, guitar), Christer Knutsen (piano, organ, guitar, backing vocals), Pål Hausken (drums, backing vocals), Bård Halsne (guitar, backing vocals), and Eirik Lye (bass). Zahl wrote all of the band's material between 2003 and 2006. Zahl's influences include artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits and Ryan Adams. After years of subtle hints on the part of Kaizers Orchestra regarding a possible Zahl solo project, information about Zahl was released in late 2006. The group's only single was "Oh Life", which received modest radio airplay but failed to chart. The group's first live concert was held on 2 February 2007, a performance that was broadcast on Norwegian radio. Their only studio album, Nice for a Change, was released on 19 February 2007 on Kaizers Orchestra's record label Kaizerecords. The album entered the the Norwegian Top 40 album charts at the #32 spot before dropping out the next week. After a small series of unconnected live performances at venues and festivals, the band quietly dissolved and the members parted ways in 2008, the final live performance of the band being held on 18 August 2007. In 2009, Zahl formed a new group known as Uncle Deadly; Knutsen was the only member apart from Zahl who would be a part of this group as well. Along with Uncle Deadly material, Zahl material was performed during that group's 2010 summer tour. Read more on Last.fm.
